After Grand Portage State Park gave us a taste of the beginning of how traders from Canada came into the US, we decided to check out Grand Portage National Monument.

The area became one of four main trading centers in North America. There are so many relics and is dripping with history. We were so glad we included this in our trip as it gave us a look at how important and extremely difficult navigating the terrain was back in that day and age.

Canoes carrying 2 tons of cargo and crew would navigate from Canada down rivers to Grand Portage. In 1951, the property was designated as a National Historic Site and opened for visitors.
